Dear Subscriber,

Eminent Tax Expert Judge Appointed President Of The ITAT

We are pleased to report that Hon'ble Justice Dev Darshan Sud (Retd) has been appointed President of the ITAT.

Justice Sud will take charge at the Delhi Benches of the ITAT tomorrow and will come to the Mumbai Benches on 16th March 2015.

The learned Judge has rich experience in income-tax law. After his LL.B and LL.M, Justice Sud practiced in the Delhi Benches of the ITAT from 1980 to 1983. He is considered an authority on income-tax, civil, criminal and constitutional law. Apart from the ITAT, Justice Sud has, during his practice of law, appeared in a number of matters in the Supreme Court and various High Courts.

Justice Sud was appointed Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on 27th November 2006. He assumed charge of the office of the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court on 24th November 2013 and remained as such till 27th November 2013. The learned Judge retired on 18th February 2014.

Justice Sud is party to nearly 700 judgements. Several of these judgements deal with income-tax matters. Two notable judgements penned by the learned Judge are CIT vs. M/s Sahil Knit Fab 249 CTR (HP) 454 (reoepneing of assessment u/s 147) and Agriculture Produce Market Committee vs. CIT (2012) 71 DTR (HP) 281 (exemption to a local authority).

The learned Judge's familiarity with income-tax law is quite evident on a reading of the said judgements.

We wish Justice Sud good luck in his posting.
